Our greatest challenge & most rewarding work. Here are some tips we've learned along the way.

Are dates the secret to easier labor? Find out if eating dates daily will ACTUALLY impact your labor and delivery or if it’s a hoax.

When preparing for labor and birth, many moms-to-be look for natural ways to make the process easier. From prenatal yoga to raspberry leaf tea, there’s no shortage of advice on foods and practices that claim to shorten labor, promote cervical ripening, or induce labor naturally. One of the most popular recommendations is eating six dates a day during the last few weeks of pregnancy. But does this really work? Do dates help with labor?

Eating Dates in Late Pregnancy– Does It Really Make a Difference?

The idea that eating dates can help with labor comes from research suggesting they may:

  • Increase cervical ripening, potentially leading to a shorter first stage of labor.
  • Reduce the need for medical interventions, such as induction or augmentation.
  • Boost energy levels during labor thanks to their natural sugars.

Because these potential benefits have been shared by many leaders in the wellness space, dates have become a go-to snack for many pregnant women. However, it’s essential to understand that while dates can be beneficial, no single food or practice guarantees easier labor. So, do dates help with labor? It seems they might.

Labor Preparation Is More Than Just Eating One Specific Food

Here’s the reality: labor and birth are complex, dynamic experiences influenced by various factors, including your physical health, mental well-being, and your baby’s position. While eating dates in the third trimester may support your body’s natural processes, it’s just one piece of the bigger picture. Do dates help with labor? Alone, they might not be sufficient.

It’s natural to want to control the birth process, but fixating on following the newest “hack” to force your body to go into labor most often has the opposite effect and can lead to disappointment if things don’t go as planned. The energy of DOING ALL THE THINGS is quite masculine, which can serve us well in other times of our lives, but in preparing for labor and birth, we need to soften into our feminine side.

Things That WILL Impact A Smooth Labor

  1. Proper prenatal nutrition, including a well-balanced diet rich in whole foods.
  2. Movement and relaxation techniques, such as prenatal yoga and deep breathing. Do dates help with labor preparation with these practices? Possibly.
  3. Emotional and mental preparation, letting go of the idea of a “perfect birth.”
  4. Support from a trusted birth team, including your midwife, doula, or healthcare provider.
  5. Engaging In Oxytocin Building Activities, anything that gets the love hormone flowing! This could be snuggling with your partner or other children, some love-making sessions (with emphasis on YOUR pleasure and comfort), a walk on the beach or in nature, a delicious cup of your favorite hot drink while watching a feel-good movie- anything that brings you into a state of safety, rest and pleasure.

Why Letting Go of Control Matters

Birth is not something that can be scheduled or perfected—it’s a physiological and deeply personal experience. Instead of focusing solely on the RIGHT foods to eat, walks to take, bumpy car rides or special salad dressings, shift your mindset to:

  • Prioritizing rest, nourishment, and emotional support.
  • Reducing stress and anxiety, as trying to control labor outcomes can lead to tension. Do dates help with labor in this regard? It’s possible they might.
  • Embracing the unpredictability of birth, trusting your body’s wisdom.

The Role of Dates in Your Pregnancy Diet

While eating dates during pregnancy can be a helpful addition to your diet, the type of dates you choose also matters. Do dates help with labor when included sensibly in your diet? Many believe they do.

Medjool Dates: High in Natural Sugars

Medjool dates are the most popular choice due to their soft texture, natural sweetness, and quick availability in most stores. They provide quick energy, which can be beneficial during labor. However, they also have a high glycemic index, meaning they can spike blood sugar levels. This is something to consider, especially for moms managing gestational diabetes.

Chinese Red Dates: A Nutrient-Dense Alternative

Chinese red dates (jujubes) are widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for pregnancy and postpartum recovery. They offer:

  • Higher nutrient density, rich in iron, vitamin C, and antioxidants.
  • Lower sugar content, making them a better option for maintaining stable blood sugar.
  • Uterine support, as they are believed to nourish blood and strengthen the uterus. So, do dates help with labor? Many believe Chinese red dates do.

If you’re adding dates to your diet, consider switching from Medjool dates to Chinese Red Dates for additional benefits. Do dates help with labor when you choose the right type? Some believe they do.

Final Thoughts

The MOST EFFECTIVE thing you can do to prepare for labor is oxytocin building activities.

Things that calm your nerves, and soothe your soul. Bringing yourself into a state of calm, peace and trust in the process.

Because as much as we may WANT to control everything that happens – birth is the one thing that shows us all our vulnerability.

We may have our plans and desires, but each baby has its story and lessons to teach us.
Your power is in the support systems you build around yourself which can allow you to surrender to the process.

What’s waiting on the other side is magic.
